ROUTE 01
The industrial hour
Everything Manchester is, it is because of water and cotton. Start at the Roman fort wall, walk the
Bridgewater Canal arm under the viaducts, past the warehouses that stored the trade, and finish in
the machine hall at the Museum of Science and Industry. Flat, two miles, and the whole story.

ROUTE 02
The slow morning
Coffee in the Northern Quarter, books on Edge Hill, the wall paintings on Dale Street, then across
to the medieval lanes by the cathedral and a stop in the free library that looks like a chapel.
Best on a Saturday when the markets are out.

ROUTE 03
The water ring
The Rochdale and Bridgewater canals loop the centre, and the towpaths are continuous. Do it by bike
or on foot in an easy afternoon: Castlefield basin, Piccadilly locks, the Ancoats mills, back in via
the Northern Quarter. It is the best free activity the city has.
